Today’s episode is very special. This solo episode, with me - Roberta - is talking all about birthdays. Ashley and I both have a lot of family birthdays recently and coming up. My own birthday included. And we thought it would be so fun to take some time to talk about ways we have celebrated birthdays with our kids, students, and ourselves as adults.

We have hit 20 episodes!!!!! We are so excited!
So you've checked out last week's episode and are wondering what yo do with it!?
Ok even if you haven't checked it (although, I suggest you do;) you will get a lot out of this SMART goal episode!
New year, new goals right!? So why not make them goals that you can actually be successful at!?
Let's make them SPECIFIC by asking what, why, who, where and which. Let's make them Measurable by asking how. Let's make them achievable by asking how you can accomplish it by looking at constraints in your life. Let's make it relevant by asking if it's right for you at this time. And Let's make it time-bound by putting a time limit on when you need to reach it by.
I promise that if you make your goals this specific and continue to check in on them, you will be so much more specific at reaching them!
Go make yourself a SMART goal after listening to this episode....and GO!

Have you ever done a calendar audit for the new year? Have no idea what we're talking about? You NEED to listen to this episode because we've got some great tips for reflecting on the past year so you can make this year even better! Stick around to the end to hear Roberta's amazing idea to start incorporating into your audit as well.
The questions you ask yourself while doing your calendar audit:
1)What was it that I did during this month that was a good use of my time, money or energy?2)What was it that I did during this month that was a waste of my time, money or energy?3) What did I do this last year that I want to incorporate into this coming again?
Extra questions from Ashley:
4) What was a waste of time or energy that was out of my control that I could change my mindset around to make it more manageable.5) What was a waste of time, energy or money for me but not the rest of my family? Who could I delegate this to to make it more manageable for me?

Ashley talks solo in this episode about a few good in service trainings she has had that have helped her in the classroom. She also brushes on a program they are doing in school now that isn't going so well and how she has created a bell ringer incorporating all of the good stuff from these trainings to start each class period out on a good note.
There is a secret ingredient all three of these programs, you'll have to listen in to find out how it can be used in the classroom and in the home.
*Correction to the statistic on childhood trauma. The info I found from a few different sites said 25%-50% of all students in the classroom have experiences some form of trauma. I wonder, though, if the statistic is much higher for low income communities like the one we live in and that's where I remember the statistic from.

NO, is a complete sentence!
I know that word alone can make you cringe right up! But practicing the N word over and over is like building up a muscle you never knew was there. For some, saying yes is like word vomit- it just comes out even though our insides are screaming NO "I don't have the time" or "I really don't have interest in doing that".
The problem with the word yes when we don't mean it is that we don't leave time for the things we actually want to say yes to that light us up!
Come listen as we speak specifically to teachers and care givers on why saying NO can mean the difference in a stressed out mess of a holiday season and a joyful one!
